2017 Symposium

In October 2017, the O’Donnell Institute and the Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte launched the new Center for the Art and Architectural History of Port Cities with a three-day symposium that set Naples and Capodimonte in a global context.

An international group of forty distinguished scholars spent three days participating in a series of gallery talks and site visits at Capodimonte and its surrounding gardens. Through individual artworks ranging from panel paintings to porcelain and from the Middle Ages to the present, presentations opened onto larger questions of circulation, encounter, exchange, and transformation within a network spanning Europe, the Americas, and Asia.

In addition to speakers from distinguished institutions in Europe and the United States, participants included scholars from important universities in Naples: Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II, Università degli Studi di Napoli L’Orientale, Università degli Studi Suor Orsola Benincasa, and Università della Campania Luigi Vanvitelli. Honored guests included the President of the Sorbonne, the President of the Port of Naples, the President of the International Propeller Clubs, and the President of the Amici di Capodimonte.
