Agents on the Shore: Freestanding Arches in Roman Port Cities

While freestanding Roman arches have been the subject of many comprehensive studies, relatively little attention has been given to harbor arches erected in Roman port cities. The primary aim of this study is to examine harbor arches from a new perspective, emphasizing connections among iconography, context, and reception.

Ottoman Otranto: Southern Italian Artistic Responses to an Ottoman Invasion

This presentation focuses on the visual repercussions of the Ottoman invasion of Otranto in 1480 as a mode of cross-cultural contact between Italy and the Ottoman Empire. It addresses not only cases in Otranto and throughout the Salento, but also considers Sicily and Naples as related sites of southern Italian artistic response to and engagement with Islamic arts and culture.
