Laura Gilpin’s “Pueblo”: a journey into one of the archive collections of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art
This presentation provides an overview of the research project of the current Fellow in Photograph Conservation, Ariadna Rodriguez. The project investigates connections between objects, such as negatives, prints, and documents in the Laura Gilpin archive preserved at the Amon Carter Museum. The research also explores the technical and creative processes Gilpin employed to produce her book “Pueblo: A Camera Chronicle”, as well as shifts in the photographer’s technique and style during this period (1921-1940). Gilpin’s work will be researched using equipment from the Amon Carter Museum’s conservation laboratory.
BIOS
Fernanda Valverde is the Conservator of Photographs at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas. Before joining this museum, she served as Chair of two programs at the National School for Conservation in Mexico City, Mexico: The International Postgraduate Program in Photograph Conservation, and the Master in Conservation of Documental Heritage. During her time in Mexico City, Fernanda worked as conservation consultant for the Mexican National Archives and the National Library of History and Anthropology. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Conservation of Cultural Heritage from the National School of Conservation, Mexico City, Mexico; a Master of Science from the Rochester Institute of Technology, and was a Fellow of the Advanced Residency Program in Photograph Conservation of the Image Permanence Institute and the International Museum of Photography and Film at George Eastman Museum, in Rochester, New York.
Ariadna Rodriguez Corte is the Fellow in Photography Conservation at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas. She studied Conservation at the National School of Conservation Manuel del Castillo Negrete in Mexico City, Mexico. She has worked in the National Archives of Mexico and in the paper Conservation Laboratory at the National Direction of Cultural Heritage Conservation and as a freelance for The Frida Kahlo’s Museum and the National Library of Mexico.
