This wide-ranging research area focuses on the art of the United States of America in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. It includes all manner of visual and material cultures and media and explores American art within the context of cultural, social, economic, political, and philosophical developments. The O’Donnell Institute partners with the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Nasher Sculpture Center for research and opportunities in this area.

The Art of the USA is especially represented by EODIAH faculty member Erika Doss, whose research interests and scholarly publications in art history and American Studies include the making and meaning of American modernism, art of the New Deal, monuments and memory, public art, affect studies, reception theory, cultural vandalism, Thomas Hart Benton, Edward Hopper, commercial illustration, women artists of the American West, LIFE magazine, popular post-World War II icons, modern American artists and religion, Texas artists, and the global phenomenon of airport chapels.
